I spent five years as a staff accountant at a regional CPA firm. I prepared returns, ran audits, and worked the same 60-70 hour weeks during tax season that everyone in this profession knows too well.

I started building small automation scripts during slow periods. A Python tool to batch-download client documents. An Excel macro to extract WIP data from Practice CS. Nothing fancy—just practical fixes for daily frustrations.
Then a partner asked if I could build something bigger: a dashboard that showed real-time WIP and realization rates without manual exports. I built it over a few weekends. Within a month, the firm's management style changed—partners could finally see capacity problems before they became crises.
That's when I realized: CPA firms desperately need this kind of help, but almost no one is building it. Most consulting firms don't understand accounting workflow deeply enough. And most accountants don't know enough about technology to build it themselves.
So in 2014, I left public accounting to focus on this full-time. Not because I didn't like accounting—but because I could help more people this way.
